In a state that’s famous for metal, zydeco, country, and a million cover bands, HolleeStar is something entirely different. They’re a duo, but they sound like a full-on revolution—and their latest album, violent pink ultra teal, is proof. This isn’t just another record you shuffle through. Nope! You’ve got to hit play, throw on your headphones, and let the album take you on a wild ride, start to finish. Trust me, it’s worth every second. Halfway through this album, you’re hit with the band’s take on Depeche Mode’s “Never Let Me Down Again.” Now, I’m a Depeche Mode superfan, so I’m always skeptical of covers. But HolleeStar doesn’t just cover the song—they completely reinvent it. It’s heavier, grittier, and somehow even more intense, but it still pays respect to the original. That’s the magic of HolleeStar: they honor their influences, but they’re never imitators. Their sound stands out in a state where tradition usually rules the day, making them a truly rare find in Louisiana’s music scene.
The album opens explosively, literally, with the first song title being “explode”. This track does not let up – it’s straight intensity in ten cities, and it’s loud and melodic. As that song ends, the next one fades in, called “outta my mind” – which is another banger.
What really makes HolleeStar stand out is how fearless they are in experimenting with sounds and textures. Every track feels like it’s from a different universe—nothing ever sounds recycled or predictable.
