Nothing Short of Silver is a fearless departure from the norm.
Doctor Nez is an indie artist we originally covered in 2024. He's from Tulsa, Oklahoma, but now lives in Colorado, and his music is best described as gritty desert rock. It’s raw, it’s got great fuzz, and it just rocks. But what truly sets Doctor Nez apart is how his sound feels like a breath of fresh air—a genuine departure from the norm. What started as a solo project has now turned into a 3-piece band with Kenny "Doctor Nez" Charters on Vocals/Guitar, Luke Prentice on Bass, and Brett Wutzke on Drums. Out today, October 1, 2026, is the trio's newest EP, Nothing Short of Silver, and with this release, Nez continues to carve out his own lane in the music world.
Consisting of six new songs, each track bursts with its own distinct energy and vibe. No two are alike, which showcases Doctor Nez's fearless creativity and refusal to play by the rules. The music has a refreshing unpredictability—you never quite know what’s coming next. In a musical world crowded with formulaic sounds and recycled ideas, Nez’s music stands out as something truly original. When I started listening to the EP, I just hit play on my iPod and let each track melt into the next, swept up by the invigorating sense of discovery.
Let’s dive into these tracks, shall we?
Dusk
"Dusk" is the opening track – it begins with feedback, and the sound builds in the background; you can hear the faint guitar grow louder. Echoes abound as the song builds into a wall of fuzz … all instrumental. Haunting and perfect. What a perfect intro to this EP.
Last
“Last” is the second song on this EP, and it starts jamming right out of the gate with heavy, distorted guitars until the vocals come in and take you on a ride through fuzz and nostalgia. “Last” has a steady groove that carries through to the end, when the breakdown slows the pace into a mellower groove. This is a solid track that finishes with howls and screams that speak truth. Great song.
Pale Full Moon
This is one of my favorites on the EP. I love the vibe, the tone, and everything about this track. It’s got great guitar tone, a rockin sound, and great groove.
Find Familiar
Ok, second favorite track on the EP. It’s gloomy in the beginning, melancholy, eerie, and just beautiful, and then it builds where Nez’s raspy vocals come in with a crunchy, stank-face guitar tone. Nez’s voice is so bluesy in parts, and it complements the song's arrangement perfectly. Solid track.
Nothing Short of Silver
This is the title track for the EP, and it opens with the loudest guitar riff, then explodes into a thrashing groove with heavy drums and head-nodding; ah yes, it comes into play heavily with this one. Okay, third favorite track on this EP. Go listen to this one. You’ll really enjoy it.
Perfectly Human
This song rounds out the EP and has a great driving rhythm that sets the pace. It’s heavy, it’s fun, and it’s got groove.
All in all, I give Nothing Short of Silver a 10/10 rating because I love how raw and unapologetically authentic Doctor Nez’s music is. If it were polished any more, it wouldn’t capture the true spirit and artistry of what he’s doing. Nez has crafted a gritty, grunge-inspired sound that feels both classic and totally new—think fuzzy guitars, head-nodding rhythms, and vocals with just the right amount of edge. It’s like he pulled the best elements from the golden age of grunge and desert rock, then made them entirely his own. The result is a sound that’s refreshingly real and impossible to mistake for anything else. Desert Rock fits what Nez has created, and that raw energy is exactly what makes this EP worth a listen.
